Understanding Secured Credit Cards

Credit cards are accepted as payment by millions of merchants worldwide. For this reason most people prefer to carry at least one credit card for convenience or the occasion where credit cards are required to secure a purchase. If you are traveling and want to reserve a hotel room, book a flight or rent a car, you will be required to use a credit card to hold your reservation and cover costs even if intend on paying cash for your purchase.

This could present a problem for individuals who have bad credit or no credit. Regular or "unsecured" credit cards generally require some credit history that indicates you are worthy of credit. If the lender feels that your lack of history or poor history is a credit risk your application may be denied.

Secured credit cards require a cash deposit or other collateral from the card holder. This deposit is used in the event you default on your payments lessening the risk to the lender. Like regular credit cards there are costs associated with secure credit cards. The common costs include but are not limited to application fees, processing fees and annual fees. When applying for a secure credit card be sure to read the fee structure to avoid cards that have high fees that use up most of your security deposit. Otherwise you may find yourself depositing $500 only to discover you have only $100 available credit after all the fees have been applied to your account.

When shopping for credit cards you should always compare offers to ensure you find the right card for your needs. Many secure credit cards require no credit check, employment or bank account verification. Not all credit cards report to the three main credit bureaus. If you are interested in building or re-establishing your credit you should select a card that reports activity to the major credit bureaus.
