Picking a Rewards Credit Card

Today, many banks issue credit cards with rewards that are designed for people with limited credit. The cards usually allow earning cash back but there also are point rewards credit cards. Such cards will give you at least 1% cash back or one point for every dollar you spend.

When you choose a rewards program, check out which purchases earn rewards and if there are rotating categories you should sign up. You may not want to earn cash back on gas purchases only or sign up every time a rotating category changes.

Don't forget about credit card fees and interest rates. Make sure the rewards you will potentially earn on your rewards credit card will at least cover an annual fee. As for the interest rates, it is recommended to pay off the card balance each month to avoid interest payments. Thus you will make the most of your credit card rewards.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I have limited credit history and want to get a credit card with cash back. Is it possible or I should increase my credit score first?

You can get a rewards credit card even with limited credit. However, be ready that rewards will be low and the card will have a bit higher interest rates and fees. Big rewards and low fees are usually offered to people with good and excellent credit history. So, if you are sure your new credit card with rewards will allow you to earn enough rewards to cover at least an annual fee, then it may be worth having such card. Otherwise, we would recommend you to apply for a cheaper credit card, the one without an annual fee and with lower interest rates.

I’m looking for a credit card with cash back. I already have one card which I got six months ago but it doesn’t give cash back. Can you help?

Before you start looking for a new credit card, especially a rewards credit card, make sure your current credit card and other credit accounts, if you have any, are in good standing. If you’ve been late with the credit card fees recently, try to make at least three monthly payments on time and only then apply for a new credit card. Now about the cards. There are credit cards with rewards that are designed for people with limited credit. You can choose a cash back credit card as you need or consider a point rewards credit card. Anyway, we would recommend you to compare all rewards credit cards for limited credit to choose the best one for you.

My credit is limited and I want to apply for a store credit card to earn rewards and get discounts at place where I often shop. What are my chances to get approved for such card?

You should not have any problems with getting a store credit card. The issuers of such cards often have less strict approval requirements and can even approve consumers without any credit history at all. But before you apply for a store credit card, make sure it has a rewards program. Many store credit cards do not offer rewards but give access to discounts and promotional offers. Then check out interest rates. With high interest rates you may accrue some debt which can overweight all rewards and discounts offered. Also, we would recommend you to compare a store credit card with a regular credit card that offers rewards. Banks do offer rewards credit cards to people with limited credit.

I want a cash back credit card that will also allow me to build my credit further. I’ve just started building credit and want to build it fast. Is it possible to get such card?

First of all, credit building is not a fast process. However, you can give a boost to your credit score when you use credit cards regularly and make all monthly due payments with all your creditors on time. As for a credit card with cash back, since you’ve just started building your credit, you can choose from the cards designed for people with limited credit. The cards can offer cash back rewards on all your purchases or on purchases in specific shopping categories. Make sure you are aware of the fees and interest rates before you apply for a credit card. Credit cards for limited credit often come with fees when they have a rewards program.
