| Student credit cards are a great way for young people just making a start in life to build excellent credit for their futures. Not only is it frequently easier for you to get approved for student credit cards while you're still in school than it is to get approved for a regular credit card later in life, but having student credit cards can teach young people important life skills. Many people think that student credit cards are a bad idea. They think that students are too young to accept the responsibility of having their own credit card, and that it will be easier for them to build credit later in life, by some means other than student credit cards. These people couldn't be more wrong. There is no better time to start learning responsible spending habits and start building good credit for your future than during while they're still at an institution of learning, and there is no better way to do it than through student credit cards.
Student credit cards force students to face the facts. If someone else is managing their money for them, or if they're paying for day-to-day expenses with cash, it's easy to lose track of exactly where their money is going. With student credit cards, on the other hand, students will be presented with a detailed accounting of how they are spending their money every time they get their bill. Students who use student credit cards will know exactly where they are spending their money.
They will have to take a long, hard look at their spending habits, and think about how they can be improved. Once students know how they're spending their money, the will be in a position to make constructive changes and develop budgeting techniques. Student credit cards make it easier to spot problematic spending areas, reevaluate budgets, and keep budgets on track.
Student credit cards can also teach students to manage a monthly schedule of payments, to prepare them for life after college. Many students live in housing complexes that allow them to pay for all of their living expenses in one lump sum. While this is convenient, it teaches them nothing about how living expenses are managed in the real world. Having student credit cards gives them the chance to learn how to keep on top of monthly payments, and schedule them into their routines.
You might think that student credit card bills are hardly the way to learn this lesson-after all, if students forget to pay their bill, it can damage their credit. Luckily, student credit cards are designed with exactly this sort of thing in mind. Many student credit cards have programs that will automatically send students an email, reminding them when their credit card payments are due. That way, student credit cards allow students to learn to manage payments while providing them with a safety net at the same time.
Student credit cards offer students a unique opportunity to start building their credit early. Because credit card companies usually assume that a student has someone helping them out financially, they are willing to offer students credit that can be hard to come by after they graduate. This makes student credit cards a great opportunity, but a short one, so it's important that students take advantage of it while they can.
By using student credit cards responsibly, students can start establishing a good credit history so that when they begin applying for small business loans, or mortgages for a house, they will have the credit score that can get them the funds they need. And by building a good credit score with their student credit cards, they will be making themselves eligible for better credit cards with better rates and features down the road. Using student credit cards can help students build the credit that they will need for a more financially stable, independent future.
Finally, student credit cards give young people access to emergency money in a pinch. You can't always be there with them, but if they have student credit cards, you know they'll never be stuck out in the cold. |
