In addition to low or no interest balance transfer offers and introductory rates on new purchases, credit card companies use various rewards programs to try to entice new customers to apply for and use their credit card instead of some other company's credit card. Because of the level of competition among credit card issuers, there are some really wonderful rewards programs available to consumers who know what to look for, and know what to try to avoid in order to actually get rewarded from the rewards program! It is actually just as easy to lose money with rewards programs as it is to get something out of it, so be sure to do your homework.

When you are shopping around for a credit card with rewards programs, there are a few things you want to keep in mind. First, how will you use the credit card? Is it going to be an every day credit card, that you use to make most of your daily purchases and pay for your living expenses? Or will your credit card be used only for emergencies or special things- like traveling? How you use a credit card is a major factor in the types of rewards credit cards you want to be looking for and applying for.

If the card will be your general, every day credit card, look for a rewards program that gives you cash back or points based on your purchases. Since you will be using the card frequently, you should be able to quickly add up your rewards or cash back.

If the card is more of a specialty card, and you plan on using it to book your travel arrangements or when you are on vacation, you could probably look for a card that offers travel based rewards. Your travel expenses will then earn you money or discounts towards future traveling.

There are rewards programs in almost every category. Whether you're looking to save money on dining, get cash back every time you fuel up your car at the gas station, or use a credit card to earn free hotel stays, discounted or free airline tickets or just general cash back- there is a rewards card (or ten!) that can offer you those rewards. Some unique credit cards rewards programs are more specific to a retail establishment- like perhaps a credit card earns you 10% off purchases made at a specific store whenever you use your card to purchase from there. Some retailer issued credit cards will offer special days with discounts to cardholders once in awhile.

One thing you want to look out for with rewards credit cards is whether or not they charge an annual fee or extremely high interest rates. If you're paying money to use the card, it's unlikely that you will be able to earn more than that in your rewards to make the card benefit you- but run some numbers to try and figure out if your use of the card will earn you more cash back or points or travel rewards than you are spending in an annual fee.

Along those same lines, if your credit card offers a nice rewards program but turns around and charges you interest that is out of this world, you are probably not going to benefit at all from whatever rewards or cash back you've earned from your credit card rewards program, since you've paid so much in interest fees.
