Good news for the more absent-minded among us: PNC Bank can print you a new debit card instantly, on the spot, if you’ve lost yours.
PNC will even reprint a new chip style card, making it quick and easy to get a new one if yours if lost, stolen, or otherwise missing in action. The new chip cards are more secure than old magnetic stripe style cards; another reason to put your mind at ease if you’ve left your card behind somewhere.
Instant card issuance, known as ICI is available at around two-thirds of PNC Bank branches nationwide. By the end of the year, PNC expects to have ICI printers in 85% of their branches.
The on-demand economy
Calling our current time an “on-demand economy,” PNC executive Todd Barnhart said that fast customer service is superior customer service. “Our customers tell us that the new account opening experience is significantly enhanced when they walk out of branch with a debit card in hand.”
Barnhart gave the example of a customer who had lost his debit card before a vacation and was able to resolve the problem immediately with PNC’s ICI printing capability. The vacation was not threatened, because he was able to get his new card right away.
The fee for a replacement card is $7.50, and fraud checks are performed before issuing a card. Pre-printed cards have the PNC logo and standard card design, as well as the customer’s name, card number, expiration date, and three-digit CVV security code on the back. Classic orange PNC cards can be issued instantly, as well as PNC Virtual Wallet cards. Other types of cards, including affinity debit cards, must be ordered via standard mail.
Virtual cards, debit cards, prepaid cards and credit cards all aim to offer quick service
Although PNC only offers instantly printed debt cards, there are other types of cards that offer instant gratification. Customers can purchase prepaid cards at any merchant counter and load money onto them immediately, and then use them right away. Credit cards can be activated as soon as applications are approved, and card members can use them via smartphone or tablet, if they load their information into a mobile wallet app.
With the advent of mobile wallets and ICI printers, there are more options than ever for people to get and use payment cards immediately. PNC is just one bank making use of this technology; inquire with your credit or debit card issuing bank about what options they have for replacing or issuing cards on the spot.
